The Japanese Garden Society of Salt Spring Island is dedicated to building a public space on Salt Spring Island where the history of the island’s Japanese-Canadian pioneers is acknowledged. This Garden is a rich sensory environment to be enjoyed in all seasons of the year. It provides habitat for wildlife and creates the opportunity to connect with the natural world of plants, animals, birds and butterflies.

The Society works for peace, reconciliation, and cross-cultural unity. We organize events and programs in an effort to enhance cultural awareness and learning more about the Japanese-Canadian legacy on Salt Spring Island. Every April, the Society celebrates the arrival of spring by holding the Blossom Picnic in the Heiwa Garden. The new Japanese community on the island has been a big part of this spring festivity, offering cultural activities such as calligraphy and tea ceremony, and making home-style sushi lunches.

An interpretive panel display at the entrance of the garden provides a historic context for the Heiwa Garden, commemorating the significant contributions made by Japanese Canadian islanders, and invites visitors to understand their experiences in a space that promotes reconciliation and healing.

The Japanese Garden Society is a volunteer organization. We always welcome volunteers to help with a variety of ongoing work in the garden and the society. There is a job to suit everyone. Can you help with grant applications, planting, weeding, buy books or fundraising? Please contact us and let us know what you can offer.

Your donations to support the society’s activities are most appreciated.

Donations are fully tax-deductible.
In-kind donations are also eligible for tax receipts.
