Japanese Canadian Memorial Story Project – Unveiling Celebration: May 31st 2026

The Japanese Garden Society of Salt Spring Island is pleased to invite the community to the unveiling of new interpretive panels created through the Japanese Canadian Memorial Story Project.

Sunday, May 31, 2026
1:15 pm – 3:30 pm

This project, made possible through the generous support of the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society, shares the stories of Japanese Canadians who lived and worked on Salt Spring Island and across the Southern Gulf Islands.

Program

Part One (1:15 – 2:15 pm  ArtSpring Multi-purpose Gallery)
This portion of the event is a small gathering for invited guests, including families connected to the history and project partners.

Part Two (2:30 – 3:30 pm  Heiwa Garden  Community Event)
The community is warmly invited to join us at Heiwa Garden for the unveiling of the new interpretive panels, followed by a musical performance featuring Salt Spring’s own Shimakaze Taiko, Phil Vernon, and other local musicians.

We hope you will join us for this meaningful occasion as we bring these stories into public space and connect past and present.
